Yes, MobileMapping is particularly well suited for tunnel applications. The MISS and IMS 5000 systems are specifically designed for tunnel inspection and operate in complete darkness without external lighting. They produce high-resolution greyscale images and precise 3D point clouds for damage detection, condition assessment, and maintenance planning – all with minimal tunnel closure time.

The system integrates several high-end components: two Profiler 6012 laser scanners capturing over 2 million points per second with millimeter accuracy, a 360° calibrated multi-camera system for image-supported surveying, a high-end Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) for precise positioning at high speeds, and a GNSS receiver for satellite-based georeferencing. All data is synchronized in real time during acquisition.

All data is made available through the Amberg Cloud Platform, a 3D web viewer accessible from any location. Customers can view their data online, take virtual data tours from the office, and access project visualizations in real time. The platform supports multiple simultaneous users and is available 24/7 via web browser or mobile device.

Yes, one of the key advantages of MobileMapping is minimal disruption to traffic. The measurement vehicle travels at normal operating speeds (up to 80–100 km/h), so no road or track closures are typically required. A single measurement pass captures all needed data, reducing the time on site to a minimum. Night operations are also possible for sensitive locations.

Typical applications include: clearance surveys and analyses for railway electrification or new rolling stock, tunnel inspection and condition assessment, as-built documentation of tunnels, tracks and roads, track geometry measurement, catenary wire position and condition assessment, signal and infrastructure inventory, digital terrain models for road projects, rail head deformation measurement, and evidence documentation before and after construction projects.

Dynamic Clearance Analysis is an advanced method that calculates the available clearance at every centimeter along a track or structure. Unlike simplified methods, it follows the exact rail curve geometry including clothoid transitions and banking (Überhöhung). This precision prevents oversized design margins and leads to significant cost savings – for example, multiple centimeters per banking transition, which on a project with 35 tunnels (such as the SBB 4m-Korridor) can result in substantial reductions in construction costs.

MobileMapping produces a wide range of outputs: 3D point clouds, high-resolution 360° panoramic images, greyscale images for damage analysis, orthophotos, digital terrain models, CAD-compatible files (DWG, DXF), BIM-ready geometry data, clearance maps with color-coded encroachments, profile reports in PDF and DXF format, and volume calculations. All data can be accessed via the Amberg Cloud Platform’s 3D web viewer.

The standard accuracy with good GNSS signal is 15–25 mm. With ground control points (Passpunkte), an accuracy of less than 10 mm is achievable. The point cloud resolution on tunnel surfaces reaches ≤10 mm. The MISS system achieves a profile precision of ±3 mm, and the IMS 5000 delivers submillimeter accuracy for track geometry with a 3D point cloud resolution of 3 mm.

Amberg Infra 7D offers a range of systems for different applications: The Amberg MobileMapping System (MMS) is a flexible platform mountable on cars, locomotives, quads or boats, operating at up to 80–100 km/h. The Amberg GRP 5000 is designed for rail, metro, and tramway systems. The Amberg MISS is a remote-controlled vehicle for tunnel inspection at 0.5–8 km/h. The Amberg Mini-MISS is a compact variant for sewers, galleries, and caverns. The Amberg IMS 5000 delivers submillimeter track geometry. Additionally, airborne mapping via UAV or helicopter covers large areas.
